In the Eastern Cape near Paterson cows milk cheeses generally based on Gouda. Estelle du Preez, head cheese maker at the De Pekelaar cheese farm in Paterson, won gold in the hard cheese class at the World Cheese Championships held in Las Palmas in the Canary Islands in 2009. Du Preez’s love for her craft started a few years after she completed a degree in psychology at the University of the Free State.

“After my degree I was uncertain what to do and it was my mother who mentioned cheese making.”

She signed up for several cheese-making courses and much expertise was gained from the Dutch family who had previously owned the De Pekelaar farm.
